This paper presents the development of a low-cost microdispensing system based on the principle of mass inertia. The liquid, to be dispensed, is driven to a high velocity before halted abruptly in its motion, thus dispensing a droplet at the dispensing tip. Factors affecting the dispensing precision and performance such as the dispensing force, initial pressure, running distance and excitation frequency will be examined and analyzed via experimental studies. Further possible development with piezoelectric actuator will also be discussed. © 2005 IEEE.
