We experimentally investigate the use of various line coding schemes (8B/10B, 5B/6B, 7B/8B, 9B/10B, 64B/66B) to improve the performance of frequency modulation-based directly modulated lasers. We show that 9B/10B line coding outperforms the other codes in terms of receiver sensitivity and dispersion tolerance. ©2010 Optical Society of America.
