Abstract: The performance of long-haul coherent optical transmission systems is partly limited by following factors: one is the beat noise between the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noises and local oscillator; and another one is the nonlinear phase noise caused by the interaction between a signal and ASE noise under Kerr effects. We analytically investigate the impact of these two factors on coherent binary phase-shift-keying and quadrature phase-shift-keying systems. The impact of laser phase noise is also addressed. Under a fixed total length and span length, optimal received power is found.
