Abstract: This paper introduces an alternative receiver structure to conventional ones in digital communications, for processing the ultra short received pulses in Ultra Wideband communications. The receiver, based on a variable threshold detection scheme, obviates the use of power hungry gigahertz samplers, and despite this, is reported here to be able to perform as well as the conventional receivers in both theory and simulation. Tools for the performance analysis are derived and a statistical algorithm to optimize the receiver performance is provided together with suggestions on synchronization of Ultra Wideband pulses using the proposed receiver design.
