Abstract: A point-dipole magnetic force microscopy (MFM) tip obtained from an antiferromagnetically coupled synthetic coating was discussed. It was found that the combination of the synthetic structure and the point dipole greatly reduces the spreading of the stray field of the tip. The analysis showed that the superior performance of the synthetic tip was due to the stable magnetic configuration and the concentration of magnetic charges at the tip apex to form the tip dipole.
