Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) are p-conjugated polymers with charged ionic side chains, which allow for vital applications ranging from organic light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and field effect transistors to biosensors and bioimaging. This chapter focuses on the design and synthesis of CPEs, which include poly(arylene)s, poly(arylene ethynylene)s, and poly(arylene vinylene)s. In addition, their optical and physical properties, including solubility, absorption, and emission maxima, as well as fluorescence quantum yields, are summarized in tables. © 2013 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
