Abstract: Limestone powder has been the traditional material used in controlling the segregation potential and deformability of fresh self-compacting concrete (SCC). This paper deals with the utilisation of alternative materials, such as quarry dust, for SCC applications. Results from rheological measurements on pastes and concrete mixes incorporating limestone or quarry dust were compared. It was found that the quarry dust, as supplied, could be used successfully in the production of SCC. However, due to its shape and particle size distribution, mixes with quarry dust required a higher dosage of superplasticiser to achieve similar flow properties. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
