Abstract: The behaviour of I-beam to box-column connections stiffened externally has been studied earlier both experimentally and theoretically and the stress analysis from the results is presented in this paper. Different types of external stiffeners have been investigated and extensive strain measurements were made on the experimental models. Stresses have been computed from the measured strains. Detailed analysis of the distribution of longitudinal and transverse stresses and principal stresses at selected locations of typical specimens are presented in the paper. The results presented show stress distribution and the spread of yielded zones at various stages of loading. Comparisons have also been made between the values of stresses obtained experimentally and analytically. © 1994.
