Abstract: Based on an elastic load transfer theory, a rigorous analysis of negative skin friction induced by surcharge into a pile in layered soils is presented. The pile is considered to penetrate into the bearing layer. Results of a parametric study on the magnitude and rate of development of maximum downdrag force and pile top settlement are presented in dimensionless chart form. Use of the charts for analysis of practical problems is illustrated by worked examples.
