Recent advances in solid-state speed control of a. c. machines have resulted in the a. c. drives replacing d. c. drives in many applications. This paper examines the recent developments in variable speed a. c. drives and compares the performance characteristics of some popular systems. Guidelines for the selection of a suitable drive are discussed on the basis of overall evaluation of technical merits, economic benefits, reliability and the possible effects of the drives on the electrical supply system.
