The various methods used for evaluating the thermal transmittance of insulation systems are described. These include the guarded hot plate method, the heatflow meter method, the pipe insulation test method, and the methods for testing cold air duct sections and wall panels. In addition to the above steady-state methods, the operation of the transient thermal probe is discussed. The general literature on these measurement techniques is reviewed to identify sources which provide useful design and operating guidelines on such equipment. Some results obtained by the authors for dry and wet insulation slabs are also included. These have been measured using the heat flow meter method and the thermal probe.
