Abstract: A vibration study on rectangular plates, with various combinations of boundary conditions which involve free edges, is carried out by using a very accurate and computationally efficient, newly developed orthogonal plate function in the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure. The orthogonal plate function is constructed by employing the Gram-Schmidt orthogonality relationship. The natural frequencies computed are verified by comparing with the reported analytical results in the open literature and are found to be in very good agreement. © 1989.
