dc.description.abstractA finite element approach for the analysis of the dynamic response of delaminated composite beams including the effect of intermittent contact in the delaminated segments is presented in this study. Based on the principle of virtual work, the present approach is equivalent to the Lagrange multiplier method. The kinematic constraint conditions due to contact, which are established by using the node-to-node contact model, are exactly satisfied. Using the Newmark method, a simple iterative algorithm for solving the dynamic contact problem is presented, and the shortcoming of the original Lagrange multiplier method for numerical computation is avoided by partitioning the system matrices. Numerical results for the dynamic response of delaminated composite beams subjected to both harmonic and impulsive loads are presented, and the effect of intermittent contact on the dynamic response of delaminated composite beams is examined. The frequency response behaviours and impulsive response behaviours of delaminated composite beams are also presented. © 1995.
