dc.description.abstract | The results of an investigation carried out on the importance of dynamic rigidity of a workpiece in step turning are reported in this paper. 2-step and 3-step shafts were machined through different possible pathways whilst maintaining constant cutting conditions. The different pathways taken result in different intermittent part configurations. These in turn result in different rigidities. The influence of the workpiece rigidity in machining is reflected on by its surface quality and roundness. An attempt has been made to correlate the surface roughness and erro-of-roundness with the dynamic rigidity of the workpiece. Besides experimental work, the rigidity has also been determined by finite-element analysis. The results of cutting tests and those of finite element analysis are found to be in good agreement. © 1988. | |
