Abstract: A binary particle swarm optimisation (BPSO) algorithm is presented for generating the optimal schedule of irrigation lateral canals. The approach has been applied to the Ghusali distributary on the right bank canal of Upper Wardha dam in India as a case study. The objective is to supply the optimum quantity of water to the crop in the field so as to meet crop water requirement as per guidelines of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) paper 56 subject to the canal capacity constraint. The results show that schedule prepared for lateral canals provided efficient utilisation of water resources and maintaining the equity in water distribution. © 2010 The Institution of Engineers, Singapore.
