dc.description.abstract | Studies of the construction industries of developing countries usually adopt a global approach. In each country, industry-wide programmes are often proposed. Where parts of the industries are considered they are seldom related to the other discernible sectors. This paper reviews the ways in which construction activity in a typical developing country may be categorised, and the potential benefits to be derived therefrom. After describing and examining a matrix devised by Turin, an alternative matrix which identifies different sectors, each with its own determinants of demand and operating constraints, and the relationships between them, is proposed. The under-utilised potential of the informal sector and the communal spirit prevalent especially in Africa are emphasised and though some directions for future policy are given, the need for country-specific matrices and corresponding measures is stressed. © 1989. | |
