In this paper, we propose CacheWire to instill collaboration among caches in a distributed environment for query retrieval. CacheWire is based on the observation of human behavior mainly reflecting intelligence, memory residue and communication corresponding to the processor, cache and network messaging units in a distributed network. We propose 2 approaches, Query-Recall: where nodes cache the inbound queries and help guide future queries to their answers, and Cache-Salvage: where cached content is salvaged by other nodes. In our study, we evaluated the 2 approaches, in a general key search system over a distributed network. We showed that when the nodes are aware of the activities in their surrounding, the system can achieve a higher cost saving ratio. © 2005 IEEE.
