Abstract: This thesis examines the evolving career aspirations of Singaporean youth and their compatibility with the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) career structure. I identify a misalignment, termed "the gap," between youth aspirations and the SAF's traditional career paths through a literature review, ethnographic interviews, and theoretical frameworks. To understand the SAF's career structure, I analyse research articles, conduct interviews with SAF regulars, and review internal SAF publications. I then compare the SAF's career framework with the diverse aspirations of Singaporean youth, noting a shift towards dynamic growth and innovation. The thesis highlights barriers within the SAF's career framework, such as rigid hierarchies, demographic bias, and bureaucratic hurdles. Based on these findings, recommendations are proposed to bridge "the gap". These recommendations are not intended as solutions, but rather as a positive direction for the SAF to scope its recruitment and retention policies. These include implementing a more flexible career progression system, fostering an inclusive organisational culture, and rethinking meritocracy. While acknowledging inherent constraints of the military such as security and hierarchical imperatives, I believe that by addressing these disparities, the SAF can strengthen its position as a preferred employer within the competitive employment landscape.
