Abstract: Education has been at the forefront of Singapore’s success with opportunities for social mobility. At the same time, education is also said to contribute to widening inequality and the perpetuation of class differences. One way to understand this puzzle is to consider the lived experiences of inequalilty in the context of education. This is what the thesis sets out to do. I draw upon Bourdieu’s (1986) concept of cultural capital to analyze the ramifications of inequality through the lived experiences of the academically ‘successful’ - university students in Singapore. Through their shared narratives, I explore educational gaps and the significance of cultural capital in their journey. Their narratives reveal class-based differences in the lived experiences of university students as they navigate the field of education, to explain how the social and institutional forces work in tandem with the three forms of cultural capital - embodied, objectified and institutionalised - to reproduce educational inequality in Singapore. This qualitative study explores the horizontal stratification of experiences across local university students of varying races, gender and backgrounds, to see if the attributes of ‘success’ explain the ‘equality of opportunity’ in education.
