Abstract: Thin film structure is one of the hot topics in the acoustic research field due to its excellent acoustic blocking ability in targeted low frequency range. In this study, specially designed triple partitions which consist of film panels provide high sound transmission loss compared to traditional material. Furthermore, compared to traditional film-type acoustic structures, such a composite structure possesses a very wide frequency band with effective acoustic blocking ability. Experimental measurements and simulation results of triple partition are presented in this paper and show its remarkable high (average 60 dB) and consistent (within 5 dB difference) sound blocking ability over a wide band of frequency (from 250 Hz to 1600Hz). A theoretical model of the triple partition is introduced to elaborate the physics behind the structure. Furthermore, several parametric studies, including combination and arrangement of the triple partitions, were conducted to further analyse the acoustic performance of the structure.
