Abstract: The frontier poems of the Southern Dynasties play an important role in the development of overall frontier poetry in terms of its content and artistic form. As the geographical location of the Southern Dynasties was away from the frontier in the Northern region, it may be hard to believe that a large number of frontier poems were produced in the Southern Dynasties. The prosperity of frontier poetry in the Southern Dynasties results in an interesting and special phenomenon as compared to pre-Southern Dynasties’ frontier poetry. The heroic and majestic style of frontier poetry may seem difficult to relate to the general poetic style of the Southern Dynasties, which pays great attention to the graceful and gorgeous effect illustrated by these poetries. However, the various poetic types of frontier poetry have shown a fusion of frontier poetry with many other poetic types. This thesis analyses the development of frontier poetry in the Southern Dynasties by exploring its three poetic types. They include the boudoir-frontier type, the knight-errant-frontier type, and the war-frontier type of frontier poetry. This thesis consists of five parts. The first three chapters present and examine the definition and the current research status of frontier poetic types in the Southern Dynasties. They also include the introduction to frontier literature, and the distinct characteristics of frontier poetry in the Southern dynasties respectively. The fourth chapter analyses the three poetic types mentioned above. The last chapter ends the thesis with a conclusion. In conclusion, frontier poetry in the Southern Dynasties has shown a broadening of themes and styles.
