Title: | A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE IAQ OF A FITNESS GYMNASIUM PRE AND POST-COVID: MULTI PURPOSE SPORTS HALL 3 GYM IN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE | Authors: | ALFIAN NOORHAQIM BIN RAHMAT | Issue Date: | 2023 | Citation: | ALFIAN NOORHAQIM BIN RAHMAT (2023). A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE IAQ OF A FITNESS GYMNASIUM PRE AND POST-COVID: MULTI PURPOSE SPORTS HALL 3 GYM IN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | As Singapore approaches a COVID endemic, personnel hygiene remains prevalent amongst gym enthusiasts to understand the rationale of sanitisation equipment. However, the overstated benefits of disinfectants have consequently exposed occupants to inhaling chemicals. Research on indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort levels in exercise facilities are crucial in ascertaining the extent of pollutant exposure. This study aims to reassess the IAQ within the fitness centre at the National University of Singapore (NUS) to conduct a comparative study against a previous study conducted before implementing the Safe Management Measure (SMM). The study's methodology involves the review of related literature and measurements that are both objective and subjective. Spot measurements were taken at different sampling points during different occupancy rates. The data was compared against the SPRING Singapore SS554:2016 standards, the SS554:2016+A1:2021 standards and the ASHRAE 55: 2017. The acceptability of the thermal comfort of gym users was assessed using the Centre for Built Environment (CBE) Thermal Comfort tool. Objective measurements revealed that the thermal comfort parameter was met across different occupancy rates, yet the chemical parameter indicates high carbon dioxide levels throughout different sampling points. The subjective measurement found that gym users were mainly dissatisfied with IAQ after their exercises, with some experiencing Sick Building Symptoms (SBS) afterwards. The thermal, chemical and biological parameters assessment identified the potential relationship SMM has in influencing the IAQ within an enclosed space. This study is limited in its applicability to other gyms, given the difference in hygiene practices and equipment layout unique to MPSH3 gym | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/242385 |
