EXPLORING NON-BENEFICIAL AND INAPPROPRIATE TREATMENT AT THE END-OF-LIFE IN CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENTS. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Cardiovascular diseases accounted for 32% of all deaths in Singapore in 2021. While previous research has identified disparities in end-of-life care for patients with cardiovascular diseases, compared to those in oncology, little is known about the perceptions and factors influencing non-beneficial and inappropriate treatments among cardiovascular patients in Singapore. To address this gap, we employed a multi-method approach. Firstly, we conducted a systematic review to elucidate the definitions as well as contextual and mechanistic factors for non-beneficial and inappropriate treatment. Secondly, a qualitative study was undertaken to explore the perceptions and experiences of clinicians involved in the care of cardiology patients. Lastly, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to examine healthcare utilization patterns for patients with acute heart failure. The findings from this research will provide valuable insights into the factors that contribute to non-beneficial and inappropriate treatments for cardiovascular patients in Singapore, which can inform the development of targeted interventions to improve end-of-life care. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/241001 |
