Abstract: This dissertation is a study of the Immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers' literary activities in Singapore and Malaya between 1919 and 1949. It is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction to the whole thesis, in which the purposes, the objectives of study, approaches, and significance of this thesis are presented. Chapter 2 is a biographical examination of the Immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers, which includes an analysis of their place of origin, birth year, and the date of their coming to British Malaya. In addition to providing detailed information concerning their work as major newspaper /journal editors and writers, this chapter also surveys the profiles and literary activities of those Immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers. Chapter 3 is mainly concerned with the editeral work of the Immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers in Singapore and Malaya, it focuses on the situation of their editorial work and on their editorial activities in different periods. Chapter 4 provides a detailed analysis of the literary views of the immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers. It pays special attention to the literary doctrines they advocated and literary movements they participated in. This chapter also examines their perspectives on some fundamental literary doctrines. Chapter 5 discusses the creative writing activities of the Immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers in Singapore and Malaya, with a special emphasis on the contents and characteristics of their writings in different periods. Chapter 6 is the conclusion, which assesses the significant contributions of these Immigrant or Sojourning Chinese Writers to the development of Chinese literature in Singapore and Malaya. It also evaluates the important impact of their social activities upon the local society.
