Abstract: Under Cold War and its effect on China, a number of intellectuals exposed to “new culture”, moved away from mainland in 1949 owing to the historical break-up between KMT and CCP. This dissertation observes one of these intellectuals, Chang Ch’i-yun, with a methodology of intellectual biography. By tracing Chang's intellectual life, the investigation is centered on how the intellectual’s dealing with the relationships within the following groups of concepts under the classic issues of “May-Fourth” study: “science vs. humanities”; “academics vs. politics”, “intellectuals vs. political authorities”, “enlightenment vs. national salvation” ;“new vs. old”, “tradition vs. modern”, “the East vs. the West”, etc. The thesis argues that intellectuals like Chang Ch’i-yun, who left mainland China for Taiwan in Cold War, transformed Chinese culture and new culture resources to Taiwan after 1949, through various ways, such as publication, education and even cooperation with the government.
