STAKEHOLDERS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE FACTORS THAT DETERMINE A GREEN CAMPUS: A CASE STUDY ON THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE

Abstract

Educational institutions are ideal candidates to be envoys for environmental sustainability stewardship actions by becoming a green campus. The purpose of this study is to examine what makes an institution of higher education in Singapore (Universities and Polytechnics) a green campus, using NUS as a case study. The perception of stakeholders (staff and students) on the factors that determine a green campus is important because they are occupants who are part the environment of their institution. Understanding the importance of the factors will encourage stakeholders to participate actively to help their institution to be a green campus. The factors that determine an institution to be a green campus are gathered from the review of literature on green campus. Perceptions of stakeholders on the factors gathered from the literature of green campus are then examined through though interviews using structured questionnaire. Friedman test and chi-square test of independence are used to analyse the results. The results show that stakeholders do perceive the factors gathered from the literature of green campus to be important in relation to an institution becoming a green campus, there is an association of a green campus with lush greenery and open spaces, stakeholders do perceive stakeholders' active participation to be important factor, and the main barrier that prevents stakeholders' active participation is lack of information.
