Title: | A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF URBAN REDEVELOPMENT BETWEEN SINGAPORE AND UK | Authors: | WONG YANYI ADELINE | Issue Date: | 2005 | Citation: | WONG YANYI ADELINE (2005). A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF URBAN REDEVELOPMENT BETWEEN SINGAPORE AND UK. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Urban redevelopment is a process which constantly takes place in cities all over the world. Practices vary differently for each particular city according to the different characteristics each city possesses. There are several examples of good city development which holds qualities that other cities could emulate. The purpose of this study therefore is to do a comparative analysis of the two city-states of Singapore and the UK and draw out any similarities and differences in their planning approaches. Any desirable aspects from their respective practices are then identified and suggestions provided as to how it could enhance the development of the other city. The growth of city centres requires not only the provision of quality commercial buildings, good infrastructure and other services, but ensuring safety is also an essential component to enhance the area. It is also observed that the partnership approach has taken a more vital role in urban redevelopment, whereby the public is offered a greater say in the planning process and the private sectors provided with greater flexibility in the development of land. In addition, much recognition and importance has been placed in the reservation of the natural environment, leading to the adoption of measures to enhance and protect our natural landscape in the face of competing land uses. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/231660 |
