AN EVALUATION OF THE POTENTIAL OF GREEN VEHICLES AS A SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION STRATEGY IN SINGAPORE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The primary aim of this study is to appraise the sustainable transportation strategy of green vehicles and to ascertain its acceptability as well as to develop a recommendation for this policy. This study centered on the evaluation process, which adopted a broader, more subtle approach that deviates from the traditional economic evaluation methods as there is a wide range of social and environmental effects to be considered for this particular strategy. An analysis of literature review on the subjects of sustainable transportation concept, the impact of transportation on the environment, alternative fuel technology and the Singapore sustainable transportation strategy was carried out. Also included in this study were a survey and an interview conducted with the various interest parties that will be affected by the subject matter. The survey revealed that there is a market for green cars in Singapore as a majority of the local car owners has an environmentally positive attitude and are supportive of the government's efforts to protect the environment. However, the government needs to overcome barriers such as the high costs and a lack of precise information. In conclusion, it was highlighted that the green vehicles promotion could not work in isolation to attain sustainable transportation. The presence of other measures such as land use planning, traffic demand management and air pollution regulations are required to successfully achieve sustainable transportation. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/230816 |
