Abstract: In the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, the awareness towards the concept of sustainability has been heightened now than ever before. People are realising that human activities threatens the climate which results in the degradation of the environment. This in turn, poses a major threat to human life. In addition, with the rise of climate change such as global warming, environmental consciousness has accelerated and is a factor that consumers look out for. Acknowledging that the building sector is one of the greatest contributors to carbon footprint and energy consumption, there is a growing demand for green technologies and green construction. The increased commitment to sustainability has been spearheaded by governments and companies as there is now a stronger conviction to address environmental concerns in economic activities such as in the construction and building industry. To spearhead the agenda of a green transformation, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore has created the Green Mark Scheme which is in line with the recently launched Singapore Green Plan 2030. It has been 17 years since the scheme was introduced and over the years, it has been a force of change towards sustainability in the building sector in Singapore. The dissertation seeks to provide a comprehensive review and evaluation on the impact of the Green Mark Scheme in Singapore via an analysis of selected initiatives released. An understanding on public and industry views is also made to propose constructive recommendations for further improvements. The research also covers discussions on selected case studies in Singapore, how the pandemic has influenced environmentalism and the reach Green Mark has internationally.
