|Title:||IMAGE OF CHINATOWN||Authors:||PEH CHEE LEONG||Issue Date:||2004||Citation:||PEH CHEE LEONG (2004). IMAGE OF CHINATOWN. ScholarBank@NUS Repository.||Abstract:||This dissertation investigates the imageability and legibility aspect of Kreta Ayer (Chinatown). A highly imageable area is well-formed, distinct, remarkable; it would invite the eye and the ear to greater attention and participation. Eleven variables namely, Attractive, Exciting, Crowded, Colourful, Clean, Safe, Modern, Pleasant, Beautiful, Vibrant and Unique landscape were used to construct "imageability" in this investigation. In this dissertation, we are also concerned about the legibility aspect of Chinatown because a legible area gives its possessor an important sense of emotional security and enables one to move about easily and quickly without the fear of getting lost. Legibility of Kreta Ayer will be evaluated according to the accuracy of cognitive sketch as impose by Lynch. Observations of the five elements: Paths, Landmarks, nodes, districts and edges will be discussed. The result shows four variables, labelled Attractive, Exciting, Crowded, Colourful, are major subsets of information that define the meaning of imageability. Kreta Ayer is also legible in the minds of the citizens.||URI:||https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/226086|
