Abstract: In the study of conservation projects, it is recognized that historic buildings retain their features of special significance whilst their surroundings are ever changing. Although some conventional construction methods commonly applied in conservation projects can be considered as sensitive approaches, they may not be the best in facilitating the change or upgrade in the program or needs because of their permanence nature. The main aim of the thesis is to explore how the principles of design-for-disassembly are relevant in the conservation of buildings, and use them to design a development in the context of the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. The project also demonstrates the possible exemplary conservation practices pertaining to the site. The proposed development will comprise a transportation-maritime museum, which will be the focus, and hotel.
