Abstract: Nowadays, sustainability is one of the common issues over the regions and every major of disciplines. In planning and urban design, there are many debates and policies to achieve sustainable development. There are many projects as cases study for implementation of sustainable development. In other hands, there is un-designed part of the city, that grow spontaneously and survived from the past until now. ‘Kampung’ is part of the city, which generally, is formed without planning. Kampung can be defined as the primary element of the modern Indonesian cities and as a traditional communal form with high density, low income and spontaneous settlements. The discussion will start with the hypothesis of kampung as another example of sustainability. The aim of the paper is to study kampung as a sustainable urban element, with a case study Ngampilan-Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Regarding the context of the case study, the discussion will be started to define the sustainable requirements for developing country and move to understand kampung position in urban elements. The next discussion is to analyze kampung according the sustainable criteria’s for developing country and try to prove the sustainability of kampung. Concerning for future sustainable development, several suggestions will be pointed out as to achieve sustainability in the urban area for a better living quality.
