Abstract: Construction 3D printing (C3DP) is viewed as a disruptive technology which has great potential, and it has been gaining ground in the construction field. There are several efforts and attempts around the world on the usage of construction 3D printing technology to print buildings, bridges, offices, houses and more. However, these efforts only came from a limited number of construction 3D research bodies, institutes or firms sprung up across the world, and C3DP is still a technology in infancy phase. Many papers have attempt to discuss on the challenges of C3DP technology, however, the research papers mostly focused on certain specific challenges and barriers of C3DP. Furthermore, there is also no paper that mentions of any suggested approach to confront the barriers in an effective and efficient manner, or in the interest of time for C3DP to be ready for widespread implementation. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to: (1) consolidate and examine the barriers impeding the implementation of C3DP technology; (2) propose solutions to overcome the barriers and thus promoting the adoption of C3DP technology; and (3) recommend a strategic approach for efficient development of the technology for wide spread adoption/implementation. This paper aims to present a strategic approach for the implementation of C3DP in the construction industry by proposing a framework for the solutions to the barriers. The findings of this study not only bridge the gap between the scattered existing knowledge and C3DP technology development, but also provide useful outcomes about the barriers and solutions for practical technology adoption.
