Abstract: This dissertation seeks to address the need to understand the in-depth knowledge of structural and non-structural cracking of buildings. It will touch on the causes of cracking, the diagnosis of cracking and the repair methods of cracking on concrete structures. In recent years, there is a greater focus on cost efficient way to reduce and repair building defect, hence the importance on understanding the most efficient way of repairing cracks. In fact, this dissertation will come to show that when analyzing cracks, it is essential to keep an open mind and to ensure that the cause of the cracks is either removed or fixed before the repair to the cracks can be made. Many professionals, including surveyor are nervous when diagnosis cracks as the consequences of getting it wrong can be potentially prove to be fatal and dangerous to the occupants. Drawing research and further studies from various literature sources and a local case study, a review on the structural and non-structural cracking of concrete structure revealed that it is necessary to call in the more experienced or qualified professional to deal with the situation as they have the right tools to diagnose the cracks. Cracks are usually caused by tension in a material or structure that will act to pull the structure apart usually caused by external loading or forces acting on it. This report will also highlight the different cracks, crack pattern, the appraisal and repair methods. An actual case study will also highlight the severity of cracking on building and the repair methods used in the case study. Finally, the paper will conclude by introducing ways to reduce and prevent cracking and also to impart the basic knowledge to diagnose cracks that appears on wall slab and on floor.
