Abstract: Technical and administrative shortcomings of the present municipal solid waste management system in Yangon are identified. In order to improve it, the integrated solid waste management system is studied with a waste hierarchy with the highest priority given to source reduction, followed by recycling and least priority to disposal and functional elements of integrated solid waste management system are also studied in detailed. Awareness and educational programs on waste minimization and effective solid waste management system are conducted by responsible departments. The study suggests that the most appropriate disposal method in Yangon will be sanitary landfill with transfer station along with the practice of reduce, reuse and recycle.
