THE QUARRY : A LEARNING LANDSCAPE FOR POP / ROCK MUSIC

Abstract

Quar-ry/ noun. a large artificial hole in ground where stone, sand, etc. is dug out of the ground for use as a building material.

Singapore’s rock bands have long suffered unsavoury associations with violence & drug abuse. Only in recent years when there is renewed interest in this sub-culture, due to rock music becoming increasingly popularised.

In this time of emergence, local rockers are eager to cast aside their undesirable past in bid to gain approval & recognition by their compatriots. Televised talent shows, radio programmes & live music entertainment venues all contribute to the emergence of local rock from the underground. Even music schools that many consider as the realm of upper society & the privileged, have also begun offering courses in this particular genre. Attitude towards Singapore’s rock bands is certainly changing.

This thesis aims to explore how architecture can facilitate this re-association of image of rock bands in Singapore, riding on this new waves of positive public interest. It is an attempt at the creation of a place that assists discovery, appreciation & propagation of local rock music. The design is to be a landscape for the showcasing of Singapore’s rock bands with the reinterpretation of the typical local music school typology. In realising the aim to bring forth rock music’s positive image, a learning/teaching environment is selected as the best platform for improvement of outreach & awareness, & also for promoting exchange & interaction amongst rock musicians.
