Abstract: The thesis aims to design a place for promotion of environment awareness with the concept of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). Singapore is one of highest waste producers in South-East Asia. Also, the current waste management practices in Singapore focus more on recycling than reuse, especially in the construction industry. Sited at Cross Street, the Resale Centre is a proposed adaptive reuse of an existing temporary vehicular viaduct that will be demolished after the completion of a new MRT station. The design of the center incorporate spaces and programs to educate the public on the 3Rs, using the interplay of commercial activities, circulation networks and programs to promote Scrap Art culture. The design capitalized on the connectivity opportunities of the viaduct and acted as a new pedestrian network to ease pedestrian movement in the busy city. Commercial programs like flea markets and second hand retail outlets will be provided to promote trading of second hand goods. There will be also workshops and seminar rooms to promote reuse culture to the public (DIY and turn waste into useful items and art). Scrap Art galleries and exhibition rooms will be incorporated for artists to display their artworks and share their ideas to the public. Scrap materials and recyclable materials will be explored as main materials for the buildings as a technical approach to the design. The intention of the design is that the building shall be a showcase for the public on how waste can be reuse creatively.
