Abstract: One of the most crucial methods of ensuring the life safety of a building lies in stipulating strict adherence to the local fire regulations. However, such regulations are constantly evolving in the face of new developments and proper accreditation processes must be put in place to ensure adherence to the stated requirements. In addition, adherence to the fire codes should not be considered a panacea with regards to the life safety of the building. This is because the clauses serve as general guidelines and may not always take into account unique aspects of a given facility. Some stipulations may also be dated, pending review or overlooked entirely. Thus, there is a need to constantly review the life safety systems of a facility on a regular basis and if necessary, go beyond the basic requirements of the fire codes in order to maximize safety of the occupants. This paper will attempt to highlight these principles through a case study of the Singapore Changi Airport Terminal Two.
