ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This paper focuses on Urban Open Spaces (UOS) in the Central Business District (CBD). Given the extensive hours spent at work, these spaces are significant as it have an impact on the Quality of Life (QOL) of those working in the CBD. Considering the high density of workers in the CBD, there is a lack of provision of UOS, which has resulted in overly crowded UOS during lunch hours. In addition, some of these spaces are not utilised to its optimal potential. Its lack of appeal has also led to an unlively and inactive CBD past working hours. Hence, the objectives of this research are: 1) To review the quality existing UOS to determine the reasons that hinder its appeal; 2) To highlight potential features that would attract people to visit; 3) To examine the relationship between UOS and QOL. Methodological triangulation would be adopted to analyse both qualitative and quantitative data obtained from the interviews conducted with both industry and academic experts and survey respectively. Analysis of Variance tests would be carried out to test the three hypotheses on the perspectives, preferences and QOL of respondents. In summary, a humid climate, lack of shelters and presence of smokers have deterred the CBD working class from visiting UOS. Implementing features that are preferred by the working class would attract them to visit and spend time in UOS. It is also proven that the presence of UOS has helped to enhance the QOL of those working in the CBD. Hence, UOS in the CBD have a significant impact on the QOL of the working class, and emphasis should be placed on designing quality UOS that are comfortable and attractive. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/220549 |
