ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The research is undertaken to investigate the feasibility of the application of micro wind turbine mounted on multi-storey buildings in Singapore. Research on the wind conditions suitability, planning permission required from related authorities, availability of micro wind turbines in the Singapore market was carried out. Public and expert’s perceptions on micro wind turbine technology are sought through surveys and interview respectively to evaluate the feasibility of this technology in Singapore. A case study to look into one installation of micro wind turbine on multi storey building in Singapore was carried out to make cost-benefit analysis. Research results showed that micro wind turbines and services for installing and maintaining are available in Singapore. However, the wind condition on multi storey buildings need to be further investigated to show its suitability. Hence, the need for initial site survey is emphasised. As the technology is relatively new, there are no specific regulations set by any authorities as yet. However, there are constraints imposed by some local rules and regulation by the different agencies in Singapore with regards to installing wind turbines. Surveys show that little people have knowledge of micro wind turbine and majority expressed their reservations toward this technology. Major concerns of the public towards installation of wind turbine are cost, electricity productivity, maintenance and payback period. The interview showed support for use of micro wind turbines in Singapore as a good opportunity for learning and improvision. However, there may be constraints due to financial budget, approval from the authorities and support from the government. Besides, people may have concerns on the impacts that micro wind turbines can cause, such as noise, vibrations, and negative impacts to aesthetics. An improvement to different aspects of micro wind turbine technology is required for people to be convinced of its worth. Some recommendations are the making use of windspeed database and computational modeling of wind flow, regulating of micro wind turbine installation, certification and grants and subsidies. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/220520 |
