ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This dissertation explores potential building solutions in the coastal waters of Singapore. The proposal aims to cater for future population growth needs by shifting away from existing land reclamation practices. Land reclamation is planned to generate further land use for year 2030 and beyond. This marked trend shows no significant signs of slowing down since 1960s; and its detriment to the domestic ecosystem and regional environment will be accounted in this paper. In detailing land reclamation and its consequences, a set of sound building principles can be derived. The proposed alternatives to building in coastal waters will be examined with respect to established principles. Factors to consider are environmental, socio-‐economical, political and citizen welfare concerns. As much as governmental efforts seek to reorganize land use within the inner regions of Singapore, there are inherent limitations and delays associated with these efforts. It is necessary, and timely, to begin considering ecologically sustainable means to generate space in coastal waters. In a presentation of proposed alternatives and contextual evaluation to Singapore, this dissertation will establish potentials to build in coastal waters. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/220330 |
