UNCOVERING GEDUNG KUNING: THE ARCHITECTURE & MEANING BEHIND IT

Abstract

This paper aims to undercover the architecture of the Gedung Kuning, also know as the Yellow Mansion, by looking into the typology, intentions, meaning, architecture elements and other related aspects of the building as well as its social and physical contexts. The paper begins with documenting the architecture and landscape of Gedung Kuning. It will be followed by an analysis of the architecture and linking it to a Malay House and Peranakan House while making sense of its typology and its place in modern Asian architecture. Finally, the paper will end with theories by Christian Norberg-Schulz finding out the meaning behind the architecture of Gedung Kuning.
