Abstract: In the contemporary world, sport is closely connected with the politics, economy and society of nations. Mega sports events not only contribute to the development of sport in the host nation, but also showcase the host city and host country. As the two most populous countries in the world, both India and China have hosted various mega sports events, but the development of sport in China has taken a different trajectory compared to India. This research explores and compares the history of the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games and the 1990 Beijing Asian Games to analyse their role in the development of sport in the two countries. Based on the difference between India and China in preparing for the Games, this research also discusses the deficiencies in the development of sport in India and proposes several suggestions on how India can advance the development of sport.
