从生存到走向世界: 战后新加坡海南会馆个案研究 = FROM SURVIVING TO THE WORLD : A CASE STUDY OF SINGAPORE HAINAN HWEE KUAN IN POST-WAR PERIOD (1946-PRESENT)

Abstract

Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan was founded in 1854. As the most important organization in Singapore Hainan community, Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan aimed to group Singapore Hainanese together, and also to promote Chinese culture and Hainanese culture in Singapore. Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan is also a main Chinese clan association in Singapore, as Hainanese is one of the five largest dialect group in Singapore. Currently, Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan is famous of their cultural and educational activities. To date, there are a lots of studies about Singapore Hainan communities, mostly focus on Hainanese culture or pre-war history of Hainanese in Singapore. However, there are lack of case study focus on Singapore Hainanese clan associations, which are playing important roles in Singapore Chinese community. This research is a case study of the highest authority organization of Singapore Hainan community, Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan. This study focus on the activities of Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan during post-war period, to show that how this organization changed in different era, and lead it to become an unique clan association in Singapore and in worldwide.Singapore Hainan Hwee Kuan was founded in 1854.
