Classification of Endocrine Tumors of the Pancreas

Abstract

Endocrine neoplasms of the pancreas are rare tumors. The nomenclature and classification of these tumors is complex and at times confusing, and it has changed considerably since the 1970s, especially so in the last decade. This chapter reviews the nomenclature and classification of these tumors and describes in detail the latest classification and staging systems. Collection of prospective data using unified management protocols over the coming years should lead to further refinement of the classification system-and hopefully the emergence of a unified staging system.
