Abstract: This thesis examines Yiguan Dao’s dissemination in Indonesia over the past 70 years. It firstly discusses economic and cultural differences among the Chinese groups in various districts of Indonesia. Based on the diversity, we learn about their religious choices. The thesis also contains most of my fieldwork results, that is, the history of the Yiguan Dao’s proselytization and localization. There are three phases of the Yiguan Dao’s development in Indonesia: the beginning stage, the 1990s after disruption, and the post-New Order stage. Yiguan Dao in Indonesia also met the competition with other Chinese-origin religions, such as MATAKIN and Mile Dadao. While, Yiguan Dao’s purity of Chinese culture creates the distinction from them. Yiguan Dao in Indonesia has been attracting some non-Chinese groups; thus, I look via the lens of phenomenology to probe how religious transcendentality leads non-Chinese devotees’ conversion to it. Overall, in this dissertation, we not only see the ethnic Chinese regain their right of learning original culture, but also see the vitality of the Yiguan Dao in post-New Order era.
