ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This article is preparing to investigating the complex variant pronunciation in mid-ancient Chinese and the historical stratifications of the books of QieYun. The article divides into five chapters. Chapter 1 summarizes the history of the study of variant pronunciation from the traditional period to the contemporary period, and then makes a plan for the research of this article. Chapter 2 is the focus of our article. In this chapter, a new concept of “the hierarchy of variant pronunciation” is provided. Based on this new concept, this chapter analyzes some words that have the complex variant pronunciation. Chapter 3 analyzes the historical stratifications of the books of QieYun based on the predecessors’ study. In our point, the variant pronunciation in the books of QieYun is are not only a problem of literature but also a problem of language. We should discuss it from the different perspectives that literature stratification and phonology stratification. Chapter 4 is a case study of “the variant pronunciation of zhi—jia(支—佳)”.
