Abstract: This dissertation is a study of Chinese fiction in Singapore and Malaya over the period of 1945 -1965. In this dissertation, the author attempts to trace the changing intellectual landscape reflected through Chinese fiction in Singapore and Malaya. This dissertation is composed of six chapters. The first chapter deals with the scope and periodisation of this project, and also the theory and methodology used in the dissertation. The following four chapters provide a detailed and in-depth discussion on the distinctive features of the changing orientation of Chinese fiction writers stage by stage. Based on the analyses conducted in the previous chapters, the final chapter presents the conclusion of the research. Twenty years after the World War Two, the Chinese fiction in Singapore and Malaya finally strode forward towards its independent development. At the same time, one can discern a definite change in the orientation of the Chinese fiction writers who began to identify themselves as "locals" instead of "aliens" as in the past. It is these changes that laid a firm foundation for Chinese fiction in Singapore and Malaya and enabled the creation of a distinct local feature in its future development.
