Abstract: Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) integrate virtual and physical environments to construct an enhanced and immersive user’s experience. This ability creates a new form of medium for displaying information or presenting different environments to improve the quality of training methods. The objective of this thesis is to research on the current implementation of VR and AR in several important industrial applications and its effect on human performance. In addition, the physicality and psychology of human beings will be discussed in order to understand the operations of the technology from the user’s perspective. A lab-based experiment on the use of video see-through handheld AR was conducted to further understand the deployment of the technology. Results from the experiment provided more insight on the nature of the task, user’s hand eye coordination and the receptiveness affecting the performance when using such devices.
