ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Background: Many young people develop body image issues during their adolescence. Body image is a multifaceted psychological experience and therefore providing skills for adolescents to manage any negative body image is important. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a manualized positive body image program, conducted by teachers in classroom settings for 11-13 years old mixed-gender adolescents. Method: Participants were 233 adolescent Grade 8 boys and girls from 2 international schools in Singapore. The research team and teachers created a body image manualized program. The intervention group participated in the program through four 60-min lessons followed up with homework after lessons. The control group received classes as usual. Both group of participants completed self-reported measures, pre (T1) and post (T2) intervention. Results: For the internalization of appearance ideals, the intervention group scored higher when compared to control group. However, no changes or effects were noted for appearance comparisons, media influence, appearance teasing, self-esteem and body image. Facilitators adhered to the program closely as identified by fidelity ratings. Conclusion: Results from the body image program were positive and encouraging. Teachers were able to deliver body image program to mixed-gender classes. Some limitations were noted in the study and it will be valuable to improve the program and study such that many other schools may benefit as well. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/189203 |
